A Case for Keeping it Outside the Camp

by Chris Postma on May 18, 2012

in Family

My wife has never tolerated “bathroom talk” from any bodily orifice in our house.  I on the other hand grew up in a house of mostly boys, bathroom talk was part of life.  Never the less, I have done my best to conform to my wife’s ideals.

As it turns out, there is good warrant for my wife’s lofty ideals.  We recently read this portion of Deuteronomy during family worship.  It created some lively discussion around the table.

When you go out as an army against your enemies, you shall keep yourself from every evil thing…You shall also have a place outside the camp and go out there, and you shall have a spade among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn to cover up your excrement.  Since the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp to deliver you and to defeat your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy; and He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you.   Deuteronomy 23:9, 12-14

I view my household as a camp of the LORD and I pray daily for Him walk in our midst to deliver us and defeat our enemies.  Why then would I turn my camp into a place where “bathroom talk” is welcomed?

Keeping it Outside the Camp

As a result of our discussion about this law we have adopted the following motto with respect to bathroom talk of any type in our house:  Keep it Outside the Camp!

A Tribute to My Mom

May 13, 2012

My Mom was born in Holland in 1946, just after WWII.  No doubt these were difficult days.  When she was 4 years old, her Father, seeing no future for their family in Holland, made the pilgrimage to Canada like so many other Dutch families did. Not being permitted to take money with them to the [...]

What I Wouldn’t Do For a Gravenstein Apple

May 7, 2012

My wife and I spent some time in Northern California back in the late 90′s.  While we were there we discovered Gravenstein apples.  Luther Burbank, a horticulturalist, praised the apple saying, “It has often been said that if the Gravenstein could be had throughout the year, no other apple need be grown.” I would have [...]

Reclaiming the Puritan Gift

May 4, 2012

There is little doubt that America was primarily responsible for the greatest era of wealth and prosperity that the world has ever known.  There is also little doubt that America is now in the twilight of it’s hey-day. Kenneth and William Hopper, in their book The Puritan Gift,  trace the root of prosperity back to [...]

Optimistically Future Oriented

May 1, 2012

People have varying time perspectives.  This is what Philip Zimbardo discovered in his psychology research.  People can be past oriented, present oriented, or future oriented in their view of time.  Most people tend to make one of these time perspectives their dominant way of viewing the world.  On top of that, each person tends to [...]

Bringing Negligence into Focus

April 30, 2012

“Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.”  Proverbs 10:4 In this Proverb, Solomon holds the negligent man in contrast with the diligent man.  He says that the negligent hand leads to poverty but the diligent had leads to riches and wealth. I think it would [...]

On Being Precise

April 27, 2012

I took up archery about 12 years ago.  I have always enjoyed marksmanship in various forms. I am now passing the sport of archery on to my son.  Part of my reason for doing this is because the Bible makes several important allusions to archery, my favorite being Psalm 127.  Archery becomes a spring board [...]

The Root of Anarchy

April 20, 2012

This is a CTV news clip of a St. Patrick’s Day riot that occurred on Flemming Drive, near Fanshawe College, in the City of London, Ontario. Flemming Drive is notorious for problems with the local college students, but nothing like this has ever happened before. London is a medium-sized Canadian City.  By most accounts it [...]

The Three Little Pigs, Shakespeare Style

March 2, 2012

One of my wife’s Facebook friends posted this video on her wall the other day. When I first met my now wife I told her I hated Shakespeare — she was an English/History major.  She told me she hated Doctors — I was a Chiropractor.  We were off to a good start. I’m slowly becoming [...]
